Aberdeen contains a range of sci-fi & fantasy communities, which can be hard to find out about when moving to Aberdeen. This directory should hopefully allow you better navigate the hidden community gems of this city.

Aberdeen Geek Army

A geek culture and cosplaying group that meet roughly once a month to have film trips, cosplaying meetups and beach parties. They also share local events and communities, discuss upcoming films and share cosplaying tips on their Facebook group.

Aberdeen University Roleplay Association (AURA)

A University of Aberdeen society dedicated to organising and facilitating roleplay campaigns in Aberdeen. AURA organise rooms at the university for people to run roleplay campaigns and keep members up-to-date on available or ongoing campaigns. They have a library of roleplaying books and run training sessions for people to learn how to run their own campaigns.

They also have nights out, boardgaming nights, a yearly BBQ and an assassins game. Membership is £3 per year.

Aberdeen Science Fiction Book Club

A sci-fi book club that meets on the second Thursday of the month to discuss an interesting or obscure book they’ve chosen. They’re free to join but attendance is limited to 15 people per event.

The Geek Room

The Geek Room is a gaming community that meet every week to play tabletop games at the Brig o’ Dee bar. Membership is £30 per year or £1 per event.

Granite City Gamers

A boardgaming community that meets every Tuesday to play a variety of tabletop games. They also keep tabs on related tabletop communities so might be a starting point if you’re looking to play boardgames in Aberdeen.

The League of Science-Fiction Film Fans Aberdeen

A group of film fans that meet twice a month to discuss or watch sci-fi films. Membership is £1.50 a month if you’re attending any events that month.

Knights of Trinity

A group dedicated to organising and promoting roleplaying, tabletop miniatures and card games in Aberdeen. They currently organise weekly roleplay campaigns at The Wild Boar pub.

MtG: Aberdeen

A community for the playing and discussion of the fantasy card game Magic: The Gathering. They hold bi-weekly events, discuss developments in MtG, trade cards and advertise relevant events held by other local communities. Every Monday they hold a draft from 6:30 onwards at the Old Blackfriars pub and every Sunday they meet at the Ma Cameron’s pub from 3pm onwards.

Nerdverse

The University of Aberdeen’s Sci-Fi & Fantasy society. They usually meet every* Saturday afternoon to watch a TV show voted on at the beginning of the uni term followed by an interesting or obscure film. On the first Wednesday of every* month they have a tea and coffee social with home baking. Occasionally they’ll have a special event like a pub quiz. They also have a communal library of donated books. They expect people to buy membership (£3 a year) if they regularly attend and to bring along snacks or baked goods to events.

Aberdeen Anime & Manga Society

A University of Aberdeen society that meets twice a week* to watch anime and discuss anime and manga. Every Tuesday they watch random anime episodes or one-off videos. On Fridays they watch an ongoing show that they vote on at the beginning of each uni term.

A community dedicated to organising tournaments and playing various fighting videogames such as Super Smash Bros or Ultra Street Fighter 4. They meet every Sunday at The Old School House on Little Belmont Street 6-11pm.

Aberdeen Uni Gaming Society

A University of Aberdeen society that meets once a week* to play boardgames, videogames and card games (including Magic: The Gathering). On occasion they hold special events. Membership is £4 a year.

A tabletop gaming community that meets every Tuesday at 7pm to play a variety of realistic and fantasy wargames, primarily historical tabletop games. They charge £60 (£25 for students/unemployed) per year to attend or £2 per event.

DeeNoWriMo

The Aberdeen branch of NaNoWriMo, the National Novel Writing Month. It’s a project where writers, aspiring or otherwise, spend November writing a novel of at least 50,000 words from scratch. DeeNoWriMo has write-in sessions during November for writers to share their woes while writing. Currently they’re active mostly during and in the run-up to November.

Granite City Comic-con

A yearly meeting of sci-fi & fantasy creators, experts and fans. Attendees can cosplay, purchase fan merchandise, get autographs and attend interviews of famous people involved in sci-fi & fantasy works. The three day event is usually held in late May, with tickets made available several months in advance.
